The new Pabay cover to be issued on 20 July 2009 depicts one of the “wild men” of Pabay waiting for a boat to take him to the mainland. The stamp has been designed by Louise Cunningham (www.louisecunningham.co.uk ). The theme for this new stamp was inspired by the recent romantic Highland novel by Sue-Ellen Welfonder , Bride for a Knight. (ISBN-13 978-0-446-61730-7). You can find further details on Sue-Ellen and her books on her Web Site at (www.welfonder.com). To many readers it will come as a surprise that the Island of Pabay actually does exist, but you can be assured that it does and is very pleased to be mentioned in SueEllen’s books! In Bride for a Knight you can find references to Pabay on pages 47, 164 and 169. The current inhabitants of Pabay certainly can not be described as “wild” but historical records indicate that at one time the island was the lair of thieves and cutthroats!
The Pabay stamp shows the happy couple with the background of Lower College Hall at St Salvator’s College at the University of St.Andrews, where they first met. (Royal Mail stamp not franked)
