Pabay Philatelic News 42 1st May 2017

This new Pabay stamp shows German Zeppelins patrolling over the Firth of Forth on 1st May 1917.

With virtually no Air Defence the citizens of Edinburgh looked at this menacing sight with trepidation as a little over a year ago, on April 2nd and 3rd 1916 German Zeppelins had attacked Edinburgh  and bombs were dropped on the city, resulting in 13 deaths and 24 casualties.

However this time Zeppelins L43 and L45 were only on a reconnaissance exercise. The Imperial Germans Navy carried out a number of patrols over the North Sea during the First World War seeking their great adversaries the British Navy.
